Joker plays an important role to help you win in a rummy game. Jokers can be used as any missing card in game. Watch the video to know about the importance of Joker, and show your wonderful rummy skills on Yes Rummy.

Types Of Joker

There are two types of Jokers used in rummy card games - Printed Joker and Wild Joker. Printed jokers are readily available in a standard deck. Whereas wild jokers are randomly selected cards at the beginning of the game.

Printed jokers

A card deck consists of only one printed joker card, which has an illustrative image of a joker printed on it. In Indian rummy, this card is used as a replacement card in an impure sequence and or a set. The number of printed jokers available in a game can be either one or two, depending on the number of decks used in the game.

Wild jokers

a wild joker is a random card picked right at the beginning of the game. This card and other same-ranked cards from other suits become wild jokers in that game. Unlike a printed joker, wild jokers vary from game to game. For example, If ♦6 is selected as the wild joker, all 6s from other suits also become wild jokers in that particular game.

How To Use Jokers

Joker can be used as any missing cards in suit. Both printed and wild jokers are used to form impure sequences and sets. Here are 2 cases that explain how to create impure sequences and sets using both printed and wild jokers.

Case 1:

  • You have two consecutive cards from the same suit, say 7♠ and 8♠. Suppose you draw a printed joker or a wild joker from the closed deck on your turn. Now the joker can be used as a substitute for the missing card, i.e. 9♠ or 6♠, making it an impure sequence.

Case 2:

  • Suppose you have 6♣ and 6♥ in your hand. If you draw a joker (either printed or wild) on your next turn, you can use this card to complete your set.

Value Of The Joker In Rummy

Jokers in rummy play a significant role and improve a player’s chances of winning. Moreover, these cards have zero points. That means both printed and wild jokers are not worth any points in the game. This makes them even more valuable as points are negative in rummy. So if you have multiple jokers in your hand, you can use them to bring down your overall score. This is particularly helpful to reduce your penalty if one of your opponents makes a valid declaration before you.
